Gas Logs...What is the Difference?

Vented Gas Logs

Vented Gas Logs

Vented gas logs are considered a "Decorative Appliance" and are used in existing fireplaces mainly for their beauty, convenience, and close approximation to a wood burning fire. In order to achieve realistic yellow flames with glowing embers, the gas is burned inefficiently. Combustion is incomplete and soot is produced. For this reason vented gas logs must be installed in a working, fully vented fireplace. Emphasis should be placed on the fact that the chimney must be in good working order.

Vent-Free Gas Logs and Fireplaces
Vent-free gas logs are considered "Room Heaters" designed to produce warmth directly from the log or heater. They are used in existing fireplaces or in approved factory built fireboxes. These products do not require a chimney or vent, and are located in the room to be heated. Therefore, their main application is in existing homes rather than in new construction.  Even though efficiency exceeds 99%, vent-free logs are recommended as supplemental heaters, and should not be used as a primary heat source.
The most important safety feature is the oxygen depletion sensor (ODS). The ODS system actually shuts off the appliance if the oxygen level in the room drops below a safe level.

Direct Vent Gas Fireplaces

Direct Vent Fireplaces are used in new or existing construction, additions, sun rooms and bedrooms. They are a complete fireplace including the firebox, logs, and glass front. Options may include a blower, brass trim, wall switch, or even a remote control. Because these fireplaces use outside air for combustion, they have a wider application than vent-free or full vent fireplaces. Installation is accomplished by framing in the entire unit, or by using a ready made mantle. Venting is easiest if placed on an outside wall, but vertical venting is also possible. There are many things to consider before choosing a gas appliance. Vented logs offer realism and beauty while vent-free logs provide efficiency and heat. The people at KILLIAN FIREPLACE CENTRE can assist you in making the right choice for your situation. Only a qualified professional should install your new gas appliance, and Killian's offers complete installation of gas lines, for either natural or LP gas, in the metro Harrisburg area.
